Marecamp – Non-profit Association
Scientific research, conservation, training and dissemination on cetaceans of the Gulf of Catania
Research and development
We have been studying the cetaceans of the Sicilian seas for over a decade to safeguard protected areas and species in the Mediterranean. We conduct monitoring and trials at sea to support networks of local and international collaborations in favor of the conservation of the marine ecosystem, and traditional sustainable professions such as small-scale fishing. We use citizen science to assemble communities of Ambassadors of the Sea.
Schools at sea
We coined the term "Sea Education" to indicate the training, especially of young people, towards a better knowledge of the marine environment and the development of consciences with sustainable habits.
Our lessons take place in the classroom, on the beach, at the port, and while sailing in the Gulf of Catania.
Our students come from primary and secondary schools, both Italian and foreign.
In agreement with various Italian Universities, we welcome interns, trainees, and university thesis students in environmental biology, marine biology, environmental and natural sciences who we involve in our monitoring activities at sea to train new generations of professionals
Theoretical-practical training offer in marine biology and cetology, and on the research methods most recognized by the scientific community.
Available in various levels of specialization, it is dedicated to professionals, students and simple enthusiasts.
We have launched, on an experimental basis, the possibility of participating in our sailing expeditions.
The experience lasts from 2 to 7 days, and includes participation in life on board, theoretical lessons and observation of cetaceans while sailing in the Ionian Sea.
Whale & Dolphin Watching
For nature lovers, for those who dream of meeting dolphins in their natural habitat, and for sea and photography enthusiasts, we organize daily ecotours by dinghy and sail boat in the Gulf of Catania.
Marecamp offers the opportunity to join its highly specialized crew in cetacean monitoring, the only one to be certified with the High Quality Whale Watching brand in Sicily.
In all our activities, we tend to involve people with disabilities or in disadvantaged conditions and associations that work to support them, giving anyone the opportunity to participate, even free of charge, in our training and ecotourism initiatives.
Do you care about the issues of protecting the marine environment and social inclusion? Do you have free time and a lot of good will? If you answered yes to both questions, you are in the right place!
Respond to the Marecamp member and volunteer membership campaign.

We have created a network of friends who share our same passion for the sea, especially the constant commitment to protecting the vulnerable marine species of Sicilian waters. They are organizations of fishermen, tourist operators and diving centers that adhere to the "Friends of Dolphins" protocol, promising to respect a code of good conduct during their observation, and to report any useful sightings to Marecamp for scientific and conservation purposes..
